Summary
Overflowing gutters in Liverpool are at their worst in November. Leaves fall through late October and November, and Crosby averages 15.5 days of rain in November, the wettest run of days all year. Wet leaves block outlets and downpipes, water backs up and spills over the front edge, and in December the first frosts freeze whatever is left. We clear gutters and downpipes across Merseyside, usually for £80 to £150 per elevation, and fix the other causes too: wrong fall, sagging brackets, undersized gutters and leaking corners.
From Chris, the owner
Stand outside with a brolly during the next heavy downpour and watch your gutters for five minutes. Water spilling at one spot usually means a blockage at the nearest outlet. Water spilling along the whole run means the gutter is too small or has lost its fall. Water dripping behind the gutter means the joint or fascia board is the problem. Tell us which one you saw and we know what to bring.
Every November our phones fill up with the same call: water pouring over the gutter onto the front step, down the brickwork or through the bay window. Our fascias, soffits and gutters team in Liverpool clears, repairs and replaces guttering on terraces, semis and bungalows across Merseyside, and most of those November jobs start with a handful of wet leaves.
The good news is that overflowing gutters are almost always fixable in a single visit, and stopping them now saves damp walls, rotten fascias and split joints once the frost arrives. If your gutters are spilling, call Chris on 07933 828 045 and we will get them flowing again.
Why Gutters Overflow In Liverpool Every November

November is when two things happen at once in Liverpool. The street trees and garden trees drop most of their leaves, and the rain settles into long wet spells. Leaves land on the roof, wash down into the gutter, and the next downpour pushes them into the outlet like a plug.
| Month (Crosby, Met Office averages) | Rainfall | Days with rain | Air frost days |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 89.7mm | 14.4 | 0.7 |
| November | 82.2mm | 15.5 | 2.7 |
| December | 91.9mm | 15.4 | 6.5 |
| January | 69.4mm | 13.8 | 6.8 |
November has more wet days than any other month on the Merseyside coast. Gutters rarely get a dry spell to drain before the next shower, so wet leaves never dry out and blow away. By December, frost freezes the standing water, and ice expanding in a blocked gutter can split joints and push brackets loose.
Terraces suffer most. Long shared runs of gutter, rear valley gutters between terraces and old cast iron hoppers all collect debris from several roofs, and many sit two or three storeys up where nobody sees the blockage until water hits the pavement.

Blocked Gutters And Downpipes: The Most Common Cause Of Overflowing Gutters

Nine out of ten overflowing gutters we attend in autumn are simply blocked. The trick is working out where the blockage is, because clearing the gutter does nothing if the downpipe or the drain below is still full.
| Where the blockage is | What you notice | How we fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Along the gutter run | Plants or moss growing out of the gutter, water spilling in several places | Clear by hand, flush with water |
| At the outlet | Overflow right next to the downpipe | Clear the outlet, fit a leaf guard if trees are close |
| In the downpipe | Gutter fills and spills, downpipe shoe stays dry | Rod or flush the downpipe, clear any swan neck bend |
| In the hopper head | Water spilling from the top of an old hopper on a terrace | Empty and flush the hopper, check the pipe below |
| In the drain below | Water backs up out of the gully at ground level | Clear the gully; underground drains may need a drainage engineer |
Concrete tile roofs add another problem. As the tiles age, grit washes off the surface into the gutter and settles like sand around the outlets, holding leaves in place. We see this a lot on 1960s and 1970s semis in Huyton, Kirkby and Maghull.
Signs your gutters are blocked
- Water pouring over the front edge during rain
- Weeds, grass or moss growing along the gutter line
- A dry downpipe shoe while the gutter is overflowing
- Birds pecking in the gutter, a sign of standing water and debris
- Green streaks or damp patches on the wall below
Other Reasons Gutters Overflow On Merseyside Homes
If your gutters are clear and still overflow, the problem is the gutter itself. These are the causes we find once the leaves are out of the way.
| Cause | What you see | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong fall | Water sitting along the gutter, overflow at the far end from the outlet | Re-set brackets so water runs to the outlet |
| Sagging brackets | A visible dip in the run where water pools and spills | Add or replace brackets at the correct spacing |
| Undersized gutter | Overflow along the whole length in heavy rain only | Upgrade to a deep flow gutter or add an outlet |
| Leaking corner or joint | Drips at the angle, often worse at a gutter corner | Reseal or replace the union or angle |
| Water shooting past a valley | Overflow at an internal corner where two roofs meet | Fit a valley deflector or larger angle |
| Gutter tilted outward | Water runs over the front lip even when the gutter is clear | Re-align the gutter under the roof edge |
Manufacturers commonly recommend a gentle fall of around 1 in 600, roughly 5mm over a 3 metre run, towards each outlet. Old gutters often lose that fall as brackets rot or loosen, and a gutter running the wrong way holds water no matter how often it is cleared.
If the gutter is cracked, sagging along its length or the fascia behind it has rotted, a clean will not fix it. Our guide to gutter repair or gutter replacement on Liverpool terraces helps you weigh up the two.
“I couldn’t be happier with the work Everlast Roofing North West did on my property. From the initial consultation to the final clean-up, the team was professional, on time, and efficient.”

Can Blocked Gutters Cause Damp And Mould Inside Your Liverpool Home?

Yes. An overflowing gutter pours water straight down the face of the wall, and solid brick walls on Victorian and Edwardian houses soak it up. After a few weeks, a damp patch appears on the inside wall, usually high up near the ceiling or around a window, and black mould follows in cold bedrooms.
Damage caused by overflowing gutters
- Damp patches on inside walls below the overflow point
- Black mould around windows and in upstairs corners
- Rotten fascia boards where water sits behind the gutter
- Spalling bricks and failed pointing after water freezes in the joints
- Soaked foundations and a wet cellar where water pools at the base of the wall
- Split joints and brackets when ice forms in a blocked gutter
Damp from a gutter is often mistaken for rising damp or a roof leak. The giveaway is the position: directly below a gutter joint, outlet or corner, and worse after heavy rain. Our checklist of early signs of roof damage before winter covers the other warning signs worth checking at the same time.
Clearing the gutter stops the water, but the wall can take several weeks of drier weather to dry out, so leave redecorating until the damp patch has faded completely.
How To Stop Gutters Overflowing: Clearing, Gutter Guards And Repairs

Stopping overflowing gutters for good is a mix of timing, clearing properly and fixing whatever caused the problem in the first place.
How we stop gutters overflowing
- Step 1: Watch it in the rain. Spot where the water spills, from the ground, safely.
- Step 2: Clear after the leaves are down. Late November or early December catches the full leaf fall.
- Step 3: Clear every outlet and downpipe. Flush with water to prove the whole system runs.
- Step 4: Check the fall and brackets. Re-set any dips or runs falling the wrong way.
- Step 5: Reseal leaking joints and corners while the gutter is empty and dry.
- Step 6: Fit guards only where trees overhang and photograph the finished run.
| Gutter guard type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Brush guards | Easy fitting under deciduous trees | Leaves sit on the bristles and need lifting out yearly |
| Mesh guards | Keeping out leaves and birds | Fine debris and moss can clog the mesh |
| Outlet or balloon guards | Stopping downpipe blockages | Block quickly if not cleared, causing overflow |
| Foam inserts | Low-cost DIY | Hold grit and moss, can make overflow worse |
Please do not climb a ladder to clear gutters in wet, windy November weather. Wet rungs, a slippery path and leaves underfoot cause many serious falls every autumn. Clearing a three-storey terrace gutter needs proper access equipment.
Gutter Cleaning Cost In Liverpool
Gutter clearing is one of the most affordable jobs we do, and it prevents some of the most expensive damage. Prices depend mainly on the height and length of the run and how easy access is.
| Gutter work | Typical Liverpool price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clear a blocked gutter and downpipe | £80 to £150 | Per elevation, ladder access |
| Reseal or replace a leaking joint | £90 to £180 | Union clip and seal renewed |
| Re-bracket a sagging run | £150 to £300 | Existing gutter reused, fall corrected |
| Replace one downpipe | £120 to £250 | Two-storey, standard round pipe |
| Full gutter replacement, one elevation | £400 to £800 | New brackets, correct fall, uPVC |
Most homes need their gutters cleared once a year, ideally after the leaves have fallen in late autumn. Homes close to trees, or terraces with shared rear valley gutters, often need a second clear in spring.
We photograph your gutters before and after every clear, and we check the fascias, soffits and roof edge while we are up there. If we spot slipped slates or a cracked ridge tile, you get photos and a written itemised quote, and nothing is done without your say. A yearly visit can be combined with our roof inspection and maintenance service.

Overflowing Gutters FAQs
How Much Does Gutter Cleaning Cost?
In Liverpool, clearing a blocked gutter and downpipe usually costs £80 to £150 per elevation with ladder access. Tall three-storey terraces needing access equipment cost more. We photograph the gutters before and after, and check the fascias and roof edge at the same visit, so you know the whole system is working.
How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?
Most homes need their gutters cleaned once a year, ideally in late November or early December after the leaves have fallen. Houses near trees, terraces with shared rear valley gutters and homes with ageing concrete tiles that shed grit often need a second clean in spring.
How Do You Clear A Blocked Gutter Downpipe?
Clear the gutter outlet first, then flush water down the pipe and watch the shoe at the bottom. If it stays dry, the blockage is in the pipe or a swan neck bend, and it needs rodding from the top or dismantling at the joints. If water backs up at ground level, the gully or drain below is blocked instead.
Can Blocked Gutters Cause Damp?
Yes. Water overflowing a blocked gutter runs down the outside wall, and solid brick walls on older Liverpool homes soak it up. Damp patches then appear on the inside wall, often high up near the ceiling or around windows. Clearing the gutter stops the water, but the wall needs a few weeks of drier weather to dry out.
Can Blocked Gutters Cause Mould Inside?
They can. Damp walls caused by overflowing gutters cool the room and hold moisture, which lets black mould grow around windows and in upstairs corners. If mould appears directly below a gutter joint or outlet and gets worse after rain, the gutter is the likely cause and should be cleared and checked before treating the mould.
Do Gutter Guards Stop Gutters Overflowing?
Gutter guards reduce blockages from leaves where trees overhang the roof, but they do not stop overflow caused by a wrong fall, sagging brackets or an undersized gutter. Brush and mesh guards still need lifting out and cleaning once a year, and foam inserts can trap grit and moss and make overflowing worse.
Why Is My Gutter Overflowing At The Corner?
Corners overflow for three main reasons: water from two roof slopes meets at an internal valley and shoots past the gutter, the corner joint has failed and leaks, or leaves collect at the angle. A valley deflector, a larger angle or resealing the corner usually fixes it once the gutter is cleared.
